Psathyrella senex (Peck) A. H. Sm. 1972
in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 24: 230

MycoBank: 321366
Basionym: Psilocybe senex Peck 1888 in Rep. New York State Mus. 41: 70
Original diagnosis:
"Pileus thin, hemispherical, obtuse, hygrophanous, dark brown and striatulate when moist, pale cinereous and shing when dry, somewhat squamose with superficial subfasciculate whitish fibrils, the margin appendiculate with the same; lamellae broad, subdistant, adnate, at first grayish, then brown or blackish-brown with a white edge; stem slender, hollow, fragile, minutely floccose-pruinose, sibpellucid, white; spores brown, elliptical, .0003 in. long, .0002 broad.
Pileus 6 to 10 lines broad; stem 1.5 to 3 in. long, 1 line thick.
Decayed wood in woods. Catskill mountains. September.
The species is apparently related to P. canifaciens, but is at once distinguished by its slender white stem. The specific name has referance to the white hairs or fibrills of the pileus, which are suggestive of the white hairs of old age."

Veil only visible on young caps, very volatile.
Lamellae close to somewhat distant, broadly adnate, at first grey, later brown, edge white.
Stipe 20-150 x 2-6 mm, often appearing disproportionately long, sparse flocculosa, silky shiny and zoned, base slightly enlarged, apex pruinose.
Spore print black with a trace of red.
Microcharacters:
Spores 6,5-10 (-12,5) x 3,8-7 µm, av. 7,4-10,6 x 3,9-6,1 µm, av. Q=1,60-1,97, slender ellipsoid, ellipsoid, ovoid, in side view rarely slightly phaseoliform, germ pore distinct. In water brown, in ammonia dirty brown, in KOH dark grey brown to blackish brown, not opaque.
Basidia (6,3-) 20-25 x (3-) 8-9,5 µm, 4-spored.
Cheilocystidia 16,5-50 (-70) x 5,5-18 µm, utriform, rarely sublageniform, crowded, rarely with gaps. Undermixed by moderately numerous sphaeropedunculate marginal cells up to 30 x 20 µm, large cells sometimes with slightly thickened walls and brownish pigmented. Edge usually not pigmented, but sometimes yellowish below pigmented thick-walled marginal cells.
Pleurocystidia 30-63 (-70) x 8-20 µm, utriform, sometimes pale brownish pigmented, numerous.
Clamps present.
