Macrocharacters:
Pileus: Young 58-10 x 5-10 mm, elongate-hemispherical, later 15-40 (-80) x 7-20 (-30) mm, sharply conically, finally flattend with or without umbo. Moist high-striated, brown, fading rapidly to greyish, grey brown or nearly white, often heavily rugolose. Veil white, hardly volatile, usually for a long time as denticles on the margin.
Lamellae: Close, gray to grey-brown with white fimbriated edge.
Stipe: 30-105 (-160) x (1-) 2-6 (-12) mm, white, shiny, apically slightly tapering, strongly fibrillose or flocked, apex pruinose, base tomentose.
Spore print: Black with a trace of red.

Microcharacters:
Spores: (10-) 11,2-15 (-17,5 from 2-spored basidia) x 5,5-7,5 (-9) µm, av. 11,6-14,2 x 6,4-7,2 µm, av. Q=1,60-2,00, ellipsoid, ovoid, subcylindrical, germ pore large and truncat. In water brown, in ammonia somewhat darker, in KOH dark chocolate brown to blackish brown with a reddish tone, subopaque.
Basidia: 17-35,5 x 8,2-15 µm, 4-spored, sometimes some 2-spored.
Cheilocystidia: (16,5-) 20-45 (-80) x (5,5-) 7-17,5 µm, usually constricted to significantly capitate, sometimes forked, numerous and crowded. Undermixed by some sphaeropedunculate and clavate marginal cells, up to 24,5 (-38) x 16,5 µm. Edge not pigmented.
Pleurocystidia: Absent.
Caulocystidia: 24,5-60 (-70) x 7-22 µm, numerous, in large clusters, usually apically swollen. Undermixed by some clavate cells, 16,5-35,5 x 7-16,5 µm.
Veil cells: 30-180 x 3-16 µm, cylindrical or slightly ventricose, colourless, with small-grained deposits.
Clamps: Present.
Habitat: Grassland, both rich in humus and sandy soil, compost, dead wood, open and semi-shady spots.
Distribution: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malta, Norway, Slovac Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA
